The Back Story

The other night I was watching a movie, and at one point a woman received news that she had tested positive for Cancer. Now although she was not the main focus of the movie, it did show how this news made her lose all hope in life. It was tragic, and one could immediately see the impending doom over her life. This being said, and please don’t misunderstand my following thought, but at what point before receiving this news did she have any hope of not dying at some point or another? Yes, I understand we all want to live long and happy lives, but we are all destined to die at one point or another. The only thing that might differ from person to person, is the how. So while watching this scene, I couldn’t help thinking about another story I read some time ago. This however was a true story of a woman who after finding out she had cancer, left everything to go and see the 7 wonders of the world in only 13 days. Read more about her story here.

The Sensitivity of the Subject

Now before I continue, please know that I do understand that this is a sensitive subject, and that it might hit some people harder than others. I personally have lost a close family members, one of which having died as a result of Cancer. I mention this because I know this is a very sensitive topic, and I have seen what some of the affects are. This also, in no way makes me an expert, but it does show to some degree, that I’m not writing out of complete ignorance. So with having addressed that, although this is a difficult subject, it doesn’t mean that it shouldn't be discussed.

Choose Life

I am not writing this article diminish the tragic reality we face in death, but rather to try and remind us that we need to live the life we have. At one point or another we are all going to face death. But for some reason, we waste so much of our lives in ignorance, hoping that maybe we will be able to live forever, and that all our dreams will somehow just fall into place. Why does it take the devastating news of sickness to remind us that we have one of two choices in life: We can either get depressed about it, and not do anything, or we can realise we do still have time, and live life to the fullest.

Live Life

My message, and question for this article is: Why do we waste so much of the time we have doing things we hate, or even yet, using the time we have available to us, simply to distract ourselves with meaningless tasks. Im not saying quit everything and follow your passions, but we should at least do something. Do something that can take you that one step closer to your heart’s desire. So many of us will literally die one day not having done anything we actually dreamt of doing. And here comes the actual sad part, not because we didn’t have the chance to follow our dreams, but because we were too busy watching TV, sleeping in or blaming circumstances. Why? Because truly living life means actually doing something, and this takes some effort and sometimes risks.

With this I challenge all who read this, and myself, let’s start taking steps towards our goals and dreams. Let’s start living the life God destined us for.
